Chess Etiquette
How we play at Wakefield
1. Respect. We are all here to improve ourselves and our game. If a board is open, sit down to play. Play with whomever is sitting in front of an open board. We have a wide skill range of chess at our school; every player in front of a board deserves our respect. You will enjoy teaching a new player and you can learn from a more experienced player.
2. Shake hands before and after your game.
3. Touch-move rule. If you touch a piece, you must move it. No arguments. We all make mistakes, and often see them immediately after making them. Get over it and move on.
4. No arguments. This is the quickest way to be asked to leave. It may also jeopardize our chess program. That will not make me happy.
5. "Kibitzing" (quiet coaching from friends) is allowed if both players agree.
6. Post-game analysis is helpful if you have time. It improves everyone's game.
7. Please reset the board for the next players.
8. Tournament play has stricter rules. Just as acceptable behavior changes relative to your environment, competition play has additional rules. See them here:

9. Enjoy. Learn together. Rejoice and congratulate good play. Do not condone behavior outside of the above rules of etiquette.
